Wayshowing: An Introduction
Welcome to the Wayshowing section of our website. As you explore these pages, keep in mind our ongoing initiative to assist the byway community on the very important topic of wayshowing, commonly referred to as wayfinding. This topic is extremely vital to byways in your efforts to create safe and pleasant travel experiences for byway users. Our intent here is to create a useful and living set of resources that will enable you as byway providers to create, plan, implement and enhance successful wayfinding systems for users and visitors. We hope to accomplish this on this website by:
- Clearly demonstrating that the America’s Byways Resource Center will provide leadership and advocacy for America’s Byways® to provide a safe, consistent and pleasurable travel experience to its users.
- Providing clear definitions and descriptions of critical wayfinding and wayshowing concepts.
- Highlighting how - as a byway provider - your consideration and implementation of the Byway Guidance System will help create a consistent byway experience to all of America’s Byways.
- Showing the importance of carefully thinking about logo and signage design.
- Helping you understand the importance of and reasoning behind the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Showing that behind the Wayshowing principles being suggested by the Resource Center; there is scientific and academic research.
- Providing access to tools for you, the byway provider, to enact positive and real change helping create safe, consistent, and pleasurable visitor experiences.
Please note that this section of the website will grow and change as the Resource Center’s Wayshowing initiative proceeds. Many of the resources and publications you will find here are snapshots of the “wayshowing state of the practice” at that historic time period. We will continue to update this website as we develop new tools, for you, the byway provider.
