The National Scenic Byways Program
The Federal Highway Administration leads and manages the National Scenic Byways Program as a community-based program. Congress established the Program in 1991.
The Program’s vision is to create a distinctive collection of American roads, their stories and treasured places. The mission is to provide resources to the byway community to create unique travel experiences and enhance local quality of life through efforts to preserve, protect, interpret, and promote the intrinsic qualities of designated byways.
The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as America’s Byways®—All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways—based on one or more archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic intrinsic qualities. (See http://www.bywaysonline.org/nominations/ and http://www.byways.org/)
Congress has authorized a total of $403 million for the Program (1991 - 2009). States, Indian tribes and local communities use the Program to fund a variety of projects based on defined eligibility categories and administrative criteria. (See http://www.bywaysonline.org/grants/.)
Together, the America’s Byways Resource Center and the Federal Highway Administration share a strong commitment to the success of America’s Byways.
