2009 Scenic Byway Awards Announced In Denver
The 2009 Scenic Byway Awards honored eight projects of excellence and one outstanding byway leader at a luncheon ceremony August 24, during the 2009 National Scenic Byways Conference in Denver, Colorado. Sponsored by the America’s Byways Resource Center, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the prestigious Scenic Byway Award recognizes byway organizations that have produced exemplary work within four criteria areas, including community involvement and public outreach; partnerships; advancing the goals of the byway’s corridor management plan; and, innovation. This year’s winners are:
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Interpretation: “Uinta Fossil Journey” Film Project, Flaming Gorge-Uintas Scenic Byway - Utah
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for a Built Project: The Fort Steuben Eastern Gateway Visitor Center, Ohio River Scenic Byway - Ohio
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Marketing: “Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway Marketing Project,” Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway - Colorado
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Interpretation: “Telling the Story of the Sheyenne River Valley,” Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway - North Dakota
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Visitor Experience: “Byway Kids Photography Project,” Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway - New Mexico
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Interpretation: The “Revisiting Washington CD and Website Project,” Chinook Scenic Byway, Stevens Pass Greenway, International Selkirk Loop, Coulee Corridor, Whidbey Scenic Isleway, Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway, San Juan Islands Scenic Byway, Mt. Baker Scenic Byway, North Cascades Scenic Byway, Okanogan Scenic Byway, North Pend Oreille Scenic Byway, Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway, White Pass Scenic Byway, and Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Washington
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Planning: “Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway Planning Project,” Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway - Kansas
• 2009 Scenic Byway Award for Interpretation: The 2007 Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Project,” Seaway Trail - New York and Pennsylvania
• 2009 Scenic Byway Leadership Award: Roberta Cordova, Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway - Colorado
