PBS Airs "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" In Fall 2009
A new six-part documentary series, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea”, will air on PBS in fall 2009. The documentary, directed by Ken Burns and co-produced with Dayton Duncan, is a historical narrative that traces the birth of the national park idea from the mid-1800s and follows its evolution through archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews.
According to PBS, the film’s primary story is based on the idea that the nation’s most special places should be preserved for everyone. The National Park Service embodies this idea.
“The National Parks” was filmed over the course of more than six years and includes footage of some of our nature’s most breathtaking vistas; from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska.
A companion book, written by Dayton Duncan and introduced by Ken Burns, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf. For more information, visit http://pressroom.pbs.org/programs/the_national_parks_americas_best_idea.
