2007 Scenic Byway Awards Presented by AASHTO President Victor Mendez

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, in cooperation with America’s Byways Resource Center and the Federal Highway Administration, recently honored the winners of the 2007 Scenic Byway Awards: Sharing Success and Honoring Excellence. Awards were presented on May 21 at the 2007 National Scenic Byways Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

These awards were launched by AASHTO, FHWA, and the America’s Byways Resource Center in 2001 to honor the best of the best - the scenic byways that invite travelers to explore this nation’s beautiful landscapes and rich heritage.

They also reflect a program that has grown and matured since its inception only 15 years ago. A total of 126 diverse byways have been designated by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation because of their archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational or scenic qualities.

“All of you here today can be justifiably proud of the work that you are doing to preserve this nation’s treasures,” said AASHTO President and Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation, Victor Mendez as he presented the awards. “I think the words that best describe what scenic byways are all about, however, is summed up in the two words of [the National Scenic Byways Program’s] vision statement - ‘treasured places.’”
